Do I need a building permit for an awning?

Not for most residential awnings. However, almost all commercial situations, especially in major metropolitan areas, do require a permit. In some areas, more than one, such as one for graphics and another for historic district approval. Your awning professional is very knowledgeable about when and where permits are required.
